Enola gay??? I know its the plane that dropped the A bomb on japan but , what does enola gay mean??? |
It was the name of the pilot's (?) mother.
Nice tribute, huh? |
How did the Enola Gay fly to Japan unchallenged? I know the Japanese did not have radar, but were there any fighters in the sky to defend Japan during the drop of the atomic bombs? Did the US think what would happen if the Enola Gay was shot out of the sky? Just curious. |
| The Japanese did see the Enola Gay but assumed it was a recon patrol. They even sounded a bomb raid siren in Hiroshima but the all-clear was given when they saw it was only 3 planes. The Japanese Air Force was pretty much wiped out by that point and it wasn't worth it for them to chase 3 airplanes flying at very high altitude. |
Ive 2 photos of the enola gay taking off with the bomb by a hidden camera, how much are they worth? My grandfather had a hidden camera which he used to take two pictures of the enola gay taking off for Hiroshima. They are the originals, 8x10 (approx size), and are in perfect condition. What is the approximate monitary value of these photos? Any help is greatly appreciated. |
| The Enola Gay is at the Smithsonian Institute. It is the most photographed airplane ever. Do some YAHOO! searches to discover the value of your "hidden camera" photos. Be prepared to document proof that your grandfather served at the base where the photos were taken (DD214 duty assignments, pay slips, etc.). Sworn testimonials, documentations and so forth. You cannot determine the value of anything without doing research, then the value is determined by what someone is willing to pay and what someone is willing to accept. Another source of internet research is AUCTION HOUSES. Otherwise, anyone who blindly gives you an "educated guess" as a quick answer for 2 points needs educating himself. Good research is your answer. |
How did the Enola Gay acquire it's name and what does it mean? I have always wondered who named the bomber and what does the name Enola Gay mean? Thanks! |
| The pilot, Paul Tibbets, named the plane after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets. |
How did the Enola Gay get away? How come the Enola Gay didn't get destroyed by the very bomb they were deploying but that very weapon destroyed entire cities (Hiroshima and Nagasaki). |
| The bomb was dropped at a high enough altitude that the aircraft would be far enough away not to be damaged by the explosion. When planning the plane's getaway, the planners even took into consideration the direction that the aircraft's propellers were spinning, and instructed Colonel Tibbets to turn in the same direction to take advantage of the centrifugal force generated by the propellers. The plane was shook up a bit, but not damaged. |
Did the enola gay and bockscar have a tail gunner? i was reading about the enola gay and bockscar and if you look both dont have any weapons on top or anything did both crew have gunners or tail gunners? |

Did the enola gay survive the bombing? the enola gay dropped the a-bomb on japan but did the bomb blow the plane up too?if it survived what happened to it? |
| Yes. It is currently a major permanent exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, D.C. |
Is there any memorial or statute for Col. Tibbetts and the crew of the Enola Gay? I heard the the Enola Gay was on display near Dulles airport. How do I get to the display from downtown DC? Is there any statute honoring Col. Tibbetts and the rest of the brave crew of the Enola Gay? If not, cant we raise money to put one up? Fat man and Little boy did marvelous things and I like to see it on the history channel. The only problem is the PC assholes who say "oh the poor Japanese got burned and it hurt them too much". Didn't japan want war? So we incinerated a bunch of guilty japs in two stinking country towns. What's the big deal? We should focus on honoring the heroism of Tibbitts and his brave crew. This other PC stuff is garbage. |
| Sure Col. Tibbits and the others involved in the Enola Gay and Bocks Car bombings were brave, but the bobmings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were two of the mos terrible incidents in human history. The nuclear bomb was and still is the most evil and terrible weapon ever. This shouldn't exactly be honored in my opinion. |
Why wouldn't we have won world war 2 without enola gay? enola gay was the plane that dropped the a-bomb on hiroshima. why wouldn't we have won the war without dropping the atomic bomb? |
We would have won. But, we would have to execute Operation Olympic which was the planned invasion of the main Japanese islands. We had just suffered the highest casualty totals in the Pacific after our invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. At Okinawa we lost more ships and Navy personnel than in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Estimates for Olympic were up to one million dead and injured American personnel. The War Department ordered enough Purple Heart Medals to award to those who were expected to be wounded and killed. We finally used up that supply of medals from our stock piles a few months ago.
That's why we used the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. |
Which model of bomber plane was the Enola Gay that was used to bomb Japan? and were these the newest bombers? how size compared between these and the bombers the Germans had been ussing as well as the Russians,,and English?
why germany didnt see the need to build this kind of bomber that could drop one large bomb? how would have been different if they had? what a bigger bomber allowed? |
The `Enola Gay ` was B29 Superfortress Bombload 20, 000lb
The British `Avro Lancaster ` could carry a 14,000 lb bomb load 1,660 miles , a performance only exceeded by the B29 .
Though the Lancaster when modified carried the heaviest bomb of the war , the 22,000lb Grand Slam , which destroyed the Bielefeld viaduct in Germany in March 1945.
Germany`s lack of strategic bombers resulted from a policy of Risikflotte ( Risk Fleet ) designed to impress Germany`s neighbours by it`s size rather than it`s quality
Dornier 17Z -2 Bombload 2,200lb
Heinkel He 111- 3 Bombload 4,400 lb
Junkers Ju 88A - 1 Bombload 2,500lb |
